Notes for TILMAN DOUGLAS SMITH:

He was single for many years and worked for the RR in the commissary car.  He liked toddy and the family worried about him climbing the stairs to go to bed (the stairs had no banisters in those days).  Later in life he married a lady in Atlanta.  He was extremely well mannered.  When visiting the family at the Hardy Smith House he always retrieved his coat from the coat rack in the hall before sitting down to eat.  He had no children.  He liked to sit on the front porch of the house, chew tobacco and spit through toe pickets on the banister.

Martha Mason Smith was descended from two notable Virginia families, the Masons and Turners.  She was the ninth generation from the first George Mason, who in 1665 founded the family in Virginia and which was made famous by the fourth George Mason, Thomas Jefferson's instructor at statecraft.  A grandfather of Martha Mason, Turner Mason, who was a North Carolinian by birth, served as a Lieutenant in the American Revolution.
