He married MARY TAYLOE LLOYD January 19, 1802 in Pipe Creek, Carrell County, Maryland, daughter of EDWARD LLOYD and ELIZABETH TAYLOE.Notes for F
RANCIS SCOTT KEY:He was born at his father's place, Terra Rubra (Redland), on Pipe Creek, in Frederick (now Carroll) County, MD., having also a residence in Georgetown, D.C.; served as a volunteer in Major Peter's Light Artillery at the capture of Washington by the British, August, 1814, after which, going on board of the British fleet under a flag of truce to effect the release of a friend, and, being detained during the operations against Baltimore, he witnessed from the deck of a vessel the bombardment of Fort McHenry, 13-14th September, 1814, the evening after he wrote "The Star Spangled Banner," the only national anthem composed in time of battle. Key served as U.S. District Attorney of District of Columbia under President Jackson. He always opposed slavery and began a settlement of freed slaves on West coast of Africa called Liberia.
Mrs. Mary Pickersgill made the Fort McHenry flag out of 400 yards of red, white and blue cloth - 15 stripes and 15 stars. In the 1890's the Army and Navy made the Star-Spangled Banner their official song. In 1916, President Wilson ordered it played on all official occasions. In 1931, Congress declared it to be the National Anthem of the U.S.
