Captain Hardy Smith House Restoration,
Inc. P. O. Box 4962 Dublin, Georgia 31040 |
This web site describes our effort to restore The Captain Hardy B. Smith Home. It provides information about the historical value of the house, the genealogical history of the Smith Family, local military history, veteran's information, and information about the Captain Hardy B. Smith Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
The Hardy Smith House is the oldest house in Dublin still standing on its original site. The house was built in 1873 by Captain Hardy Smith, a Confederate hero and prominent local citizen. His descendants, Ariel and Don Gray, have graciously agreed to donate the house if it can be restored to its original 19th century condition. For this purpose, the "Capt. Hardy Smith House Restoration, Inc.", was established by a coalition of groups with an interest in historic preservation and revitalization of the downtown area. The Board of Directors has representatives from Laurens County Historical Society, Dublin Clean and Beautiful, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and Sons of Confederate Veterans. The two-story wooden house is a perfect example of Gothic rural-style architecture. Three rooms downstairs will be furnished and refurbished in a manner consistent with a home built in the late 19th century. This area and the two-room kitchen will be available for tours, civic meetings, wedding receptions, and other small events. Adjacent to the restored kitchen is a meeting room with a large conference table. This room will feature a display from each war and a listing of all veterans from Laurens and surrounding counties who served in that conflict.
The restored house
will provide a place for our citizens to meet, as well as give us the opportunity to honor our veterans. We will be preserving a part of our heritage and, in so doing, will encourage the teaching of local history to young people. The restoration of the old Carnegie Library (Dublin-Laurens Museum), Martin Theater (Theater Dublin), and Fred Roberts Hotel (Senior Center) were very successful. These historic buildings add beauty and character to our downtown area, and the preservation of The Hardy Smith House will be another step in this revitalization process. We are not building 124-year-old houses any more. It would be a shame to let this one become a parking lot.
