History and Purpose

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, ecumenical, Christian housing ministry founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller. Habitat seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat welcomes to its house-building, hope-building work, all people who share its vision of a world without shacks.

The Dublin-Laurens Habitat for Humanity Affiliate was established in 1993. Since that time we have constructed twenty-three homes in Laurens County with plans to build two additional homes in 2003. Operated by a volunteer Board of Directors, HFH depends upon individuals, churches, civic groups, businesses, and The Heart of Georgia United Way for financial support.

How does Habitat work?

Through volunteer labor, and tax-deductible donations of money and material, Habitat builds houses with partner families in need of simple, decent shelter. After Habitat's annual Application Seminar, the Family Selection Committee reviews and selects the partner families for the following year. Homeowners are chosen on the basis of need, willingness to partner, and ability to repay.

In addition to a down payment and monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor - sweat equity - into building their house and the houses of others. Habitat houses are sold to these families at no profit, financed with affordable, no-interest loans. The homeowner's monthly mortgage payments are then recycled through a revolving Fund for Humanity to build more houses.

Churches, business, civic and professional groups are encouraged to sponsor Habitat houses. Sponsors provide both funding and volunteer labor for construction of the house. Each year Habitat sets goals for constructing a number of houses. Generally, it takes nine to twelve weeks to complete a home. Upon completion, dedication ceremonies are held for the homeowner and their friends and family members. Keys to the home and a Bible are presented to the family by the sponsoring organization. At this time, the sponsorship ends and a family begins their new life as homeowners. The Dublin-Laurens Habitat for Humanity tithes ten percent of all donations to Habitat for Humanity
International to build houses in third world countries. These houses generally cost one-tenth of the amount to construct a house here in the United States. We have established an International Partnership with the Mexico/Latin America area where Mr. Jay Evans, a former Dublinair, is serving with HFHI. Therefore, your donations not only build homes in your community, they build homes for people in other countries as well.
